palliative relief from symptomatic effusions, discomfort caused by tumor

burden, and

pain caused by invasive tumor. Operative mortality from

pleurectomy/decortication is less than 2%, while mortality from extrapleural

pneumonectomy has ranged from

6% to 30%. The addition of radiation

therapy and/or chemotherapy following surgical intervention has not

demonstrated improved survival. The use of radiatio

n therapy in pleural

mesothelioma has been shown to alle

viate pain in the majority of patients

treated. However, the duration of symptom control is short-lived.

Single

agent and combination chemotherapy have been evaluated in single and combined

modality studies. The most studied agent is doxorubicin, which has produced

partial responses in approximately 15% to 20% of patients studied. Some

combination chemotherapy regimens have been reported to have higher response

rates in small phase II trials. However the toxicity reported is also higher

and there is no evidence that combination regimens result in longer survival

or

longer control of symptoms. Recurrent pleural effusions may be treated

Lewis and Sholnick have announced the publication of some simple precautionary steps can be taken to avoid high risk situations in regards to asbestos and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It refers specifically to a cancerous tumor which involves the mesothelial cells of an organ, usually the lungs or abdomen. Despite being classified under the rather broad category of cancer, however, Mesothelioma is unique for a number of reasons. First is the immense devastation of the disease, and the inability for modern medical techniques to significantly slow its onset or offer a cure. Approximately 75% of patients die within 18 months of the first signs of the disease. Second, is the long latency period between exposure to the cause of the disease, asbestos, and its onset. Latency runs the gamut from 15 to 50 years, meaning that a person may have been exposed to asbestos more than a half century before the first serious signs of the disease manifest themselves. The average reported latency, however, is approximately 35-40 years.

Precautionary Steps

Because of the devastating nature of the disease and because we are able to point to a single root source, asbestos exposure, there is significant reason for all individuals to take necessary precautions to avoid contraction of the disease. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor that develops on the mesothelial cells of either the lungs, heart or abdominal organs, and plagues those who have been exposed to asbestos for a prolonged period of time. Many who fall victim to this disease are people who have worked in specific trades or fields prior to the 1970s, such as blacksmiths, electricians, millwrights, and oil refinery workers.

Since it can take up to forty years for symptoms to surface, mesothelioma-related deaths are higher than ever in the 21st century. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that 1,493 people died from asbestos in 2000, compared to 77 people in 1968.

Mesothelioma treatment methods differ depending on the stage of the cancer upon detection, as well as the patientís age and personal choice of treatment. The four distinct stages of the disease are a factor in determining the type of mesothelioma treatment that can be carried out. The first stage is when the tumor has had limited growth on the pleural lining (the lining of the lungs). At this stage, an attempt can be made to surgically remove the entire tumor. However, if the tumor is detected at a later stage when it has invaded surrounding areas, it is considered incurable.

Traditionally, the later stages of mesothelioma have been treated with either chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells while radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Researchers with the largest phase III trial

to date for mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer affecting the lining of

the lung, reported results showing that patients on a new chemotherapy

drug regimen

live longer and have less pain than those on an older drug. The

findings were announced at the annual meeting of the American Society

of Clinical Oncology meeting in Orlando, Fla., on May 20, 2002.

Pemetrexed

(brand name AlimtaŸ) is a novel antifolate, a class of drugs that

targets the folic acid metabolic pathway, which effects availability of

certain B complex vitamins. The results of the trial show that tumors

shrank in 41 percent of patients on pemetrexed in combination with a

more commonly used chemotherapy agent called cisplatin.

Only 17 percent of patients receiving cisplatin alone experienced tumor

shrinkage. Additionally, those on the pemetrexed combination lived

nearly three months longer than those on cisplatin alone.

According

to lead author, Nicholas J. Vogelzang, M.D., University of Chicago

Cancer Research Center, "This is the largest clinical trial ever

conducted in this disease and the 25 to 30 percent improvement in

survival for patients on the combination therapy is the first time

anyone has documented a significant improvement in patients treated for

mesothelioma."

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is associated with a history of asbestos

exposure in about 70 to 80 percent of all cases and there is no

approved or very effective chemotherapy for the disease. Researchers

hypothesized that pemetrexed might prove effective in treating this

disease because it targets key enzymes (molecules that speed up

chemical reactions in the body) thought to play a role in allowing the

rapid growth of this tumor.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It refers specifically to a cancerous tumor which involves the mesothelial cells of an organ, usually the lungs or abdomen. Despite being classified under the rather broad category of cancer, however, Mesothelioma is unique for a number of reasons. First is the immense devastation of the disease, and the inability for modern medical techniques to significantly slow its onset or offer a cure. Approximately 75% of patients die within 18 months of the first signs of the disease. Second, is the long latency period between exposure to the cause of the disease, asbestos, and its onset. Latency runs the gamut from 15 to 50 years, meaning that a person may have been exposed to asbestos more than a half century before the first serious signs of the disease manifest themselves. The average reported latency, however, is approximately 35-40 years.

Precautionary Steps

Because of the devastating nature of the disease and because we are able to point to a single root source, asbestos exposure, there is significant reason for all individuals to take necessary precautions to avoid contraction of the disease. While certainly no steps taken can fully eliminate all risk of asbestos exposure, some simple precautionary steps can be taken to avoid high risk situations.

?Asbestos? is the name given to a group of minerals that occurnaturally

as bundles of fibers which can be separated into thinthreads. These fibers

are not affected by heat or chemicals and do not conduct electricity. For

these reasons, asbestos has been widely used in many industries. Four types

of asbestos have been used commercially:
